  • Poetry & Performance Workshop for Adults

    Description: Celebrate National Poetry Month and have fun preparing for the upcoming Adult Poetry Slam at this interactive, engaging workshop with Adams County Poet Laureate, Kerrie Joy!

    Stretch your imagination and practice playing with words to create or fine-tune your poems. Experiment with different storytelling techniques in a safe, supportive environment that will help you gain skills to feel more confident at open mics, poetry slams, and other stage performances. Appropriate for adults. This workshop will be hosted in English. Space is limited; registration recommended. If you want to come on the day of, we'd love to still have you!

  • Adult Poetry Slam with Poet Laureate Kerrie Joy

    Description: Calling all adult writers, poets, and performers: You’re invited to attend and compete in Anythink’s second Adult Poetry Slam with Adams County Poet Laureate Kerrie Joy!

    Bring your friends and family for a fun evening watching live poetry performances, connecting with community and enjoying delicious refreshments.

    Want to compete? Here are all the details: 

    • To perform and compete in the Adult Poetry Slam, you must be an adult 18 years old.
    • Poets will perform their piece on a stage in front of a live, supportive audience.
    • The top three poets will win Visa gift cards. 
    • All skill levels and abilities are welcome to perform.
    • Slots in the poetry slam are limited; registration is recommended.
    • If there are still slots open on the day of the slam, there will be an opportunity to sign up in person!

      This event is being hosted at Anythink Huron Street. 

    Poetry Slam Competition Rules

    1. Each poem must be original to the participating poet. 
    2. Each poet has three minutes to read one poem. There will be a 10-second grace period. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score by the scorekeeper. For every 10 seconds passed over time, 0.5 points will be deducted from the total score.
    3. The poet may not use props, costumes, pre-recorded/taped music, or musical instruments while performing. Performers are allowed to sing, beatbox, and make any other sounds with their bodies during the performance. 
    4. In the event of a tie, the top two poets will face off in a final round, so poets should come prepared with at least two original poems they are willing to perform.

    Want to come to watch and support? 
    Audience members of all ages are welcome to come cheer on the poets! Come have fun connecting with other poetry lovers in your community. No registration is necessary to attend as an audience member. 
     
    All ages are welcome to attend the Poetry Slam, but only adults 18 years old and over will be allowed to perform/compete. This event is free of charge and will be hosted in English.
