Pecos Street Widening Project

Project Overview

Adams County in cooperation with Hamon Infrastructure are set to begin a road widening project on Pecos Street between 52nd Avenue and 58th Avenue at the beginning of October. The current single through-lane road will be expanded to two through-lanes of travel in both directions, totaling four lanes by the end of the project. In addition to widening operations, crews will be upgrading and relocating utilities, installing new signals at 52nd and 54th Avenue, and improving medians, turn-lanes, curb and gutters, and concrete within the project zone. Work will impact north and southbound lanes and is projected to be completed in the fall of 2024. These improvements are expected to reduce traffic congestion, create safer and more accessible travel paths for multimodal users and enhance the functionality of several intersection locations.

Upcoming Project Operations - Week of June 24

  • General working hours will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Drivers can expect continued permanent traffic realignments throughout the week as part of Phase I of the project’s widening operations. Phase I includes a 24/7 closure of the west side of the roadway, with lanes shifting to the east side. One through-lane of traffic will remain open in both directions.
  • A full closure at the 52nd Place and Pecos Street intersection will continue through this week, remaining in effect for 24 hours a day. To reach 52nd Place from the west side, cars will be detoured south to 52nd Avenue, west to Tejon Street, and north toward 52nd Place. Please follow all signage on-site and see the detour map below for additional navigation information. All business access will remain open during the closure.
  • Storm sewer operations will continue at W 56th Avenue and Pecos Street with a westbound turn lane closure from Pecos Street. Drivers will be detoured on 52nd Avenue to Federal Boulevard to access 56th Avenue from the west end (see map below for more details). Eastbound travelers will be able to travel through W 56th Avenue and turn onto Pecos Street as normal. All business access at the intersection will remain open at both the Pecos Street and 56th Avenue driveways. Please do not use the parking lot to navigate around the closed section of road and follow all marked detour signs.
  • The project team does not anticipate significant delays associated with the upcoming closures, however drivers are encouraged to account for up to 10 minutes of extra travel time.
  • Please exercise extreme caution when traveling through the work zone. Slow down, watch for workers and equipment and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
  • Due to unexpected issues related to underground utility relocations within the work zone, some delays to the project schedule are anticipated. The project team thanks you for your continued patience.

On Wednesday, June 26, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be water service adjustments taking place that will require temporary water interruptions for residents along 54th Avenue adjacent to Pecos Street. Properties that will be impacted by upcoming water outages will receive flyer notices prior to the commencement of work with additional details.

All schedules are dependent on weather and resource availability and are subject to change.
