Electric Vehicle Charging 101

There are three levels of electric vehicle charging:

  • Level 1: This charger uses a standard 120V household outlet. This is the slowest charging method and typically adds 2-5 miles of range per hour. They are beneficial for overnight charging at home.
  • Level 2: This charging requires a dedicated charging station with 240V. Generally, this charger will add 10-60 miles of range per hour. These can be installed at homes and are the most common chargers found for public use.
  • DC Fast Charging: This charger provides the fastest charging of all three levels. It can add 60-100 miles of range in 20-30 minutes. They are ideal along highways for long road trips.

Electric vehicle chargers can be found in many different public locations. Check out this Electric Vehicle Charger Map to find nearby chargers. For public chargers, it depends on the electric vehicle charger owner if they decide to offer the charger for free or charge a fee per kW or time used.
