Adams County Celebrates Affordable Housing Complex Grand Opening
Adams County’s Community and Economic Development Department, along with site developer Delwest, celebrated the grand opening of the Baker School Apartments affordable housing complex with a reception on Thursday, Jan 24. Adams County Commissioners Steve O’Dorisio and Eva J. Henry spoke at the opening along with Delwest’s Joe DelZotto.
“For decades, neighbors in this area could hear the symphony of children playing on the Baker School property,” said Commissioner O’Dorisio. “And now, with amenities like the playground and the school facilities here, there will be kids playing at this location once again.”
Located at 3555 W. 64th Ave. in unincorporated Adams County, Baker School Apartments consists of 142 one-, two-, and three-bedroom affordable housing units identified as a need in the county’s Balanced Housing Plan.
In addition to housing, community partners such as Unison Housing Partners, Growing Home, St. Anthony Hospital, and Red Rocks Community College will provide services such as after-school programs, financial planning assistance, and pop-up medical and dental screenings.
“Addressing the need for affordable housing in Adams County is a heavy lift,” said Commissioner Henry. “But many hands make light work, and with the partners we have, the dream of being able to afford a place to live and raise a family is a dream more Adams County families will realize.”
Baker School Apartments received over $1.1 million in Adams County Housing and Urban Development funding, including $650,000 in HOME Investment Partnerships Program funds and $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds.
Adams County completed a Housing Needs Assessment in 2017. One of the goals identified in the assessment is to reduce the affordability gap with housing costs and incomes, especially for renters. The Baker School Apartments development supports the objective of providing affordable rental housing and other essential services to residents who are extremely cost-burdened.
