Adams County, VOA Colorado, DRCOG, and Senior Hub Seek Volunteers to Deliver Meals to Older Adults
The nonprofit Senior Hub recently reported it was running out of funds to continue supporting its Meals on Wheels program in Adams County. To ensure Senior Hub’s existing clients continue to receive meal delivery services, Adams County has partnered with Senior Hub, Volunteers of America Colorado (VOA Colorado), and Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to fund emergency meals while a long-term strategy is developed to continue these services for older adults into the new year.
“Adams County cares deeply about our older adults, so jumping in and finding a solution is a no brainer,” said Steve O’Dorisio, Chair, Board of County Commissioners. “We’re grateful to VOA Colorado and DRCOG for joining forces to ensure vulnerable older adults have the meals they need.”
Over the next few weeks, Senior Hub will continue coordinating its existing volunteers to deliver meals prepared by VOA Colorado while Adams County and DRCOG will provide temporary funding to cover the costs of these meal. In addition, all these partners will reach out to their own networks to recruit additional volunteers for support.
“VOA Colorado is happy to jump in to make sure that people get the meals they need and that everyone is fed,” said Dave Schunk, President and CEO, VOA Colorado. “Partnerships are vital to ensure those most in need are cared for, especially when there are challenging times. VOA Colorado is honored to be a part of the solution, working with our great partners Adams County and DRCOG, to get these meals to fellow Coloradoans.”
“As the Area Agency on Aging in the metro area, we’re committed to helping older adults age well in their homes, and nutritious meals are obviously a key to that,” said Douglas Rex, executive director of the Denver Regional Council of Governments. “We’re happy to work with such great regional partners to provide this safety net, and to explore longer term solutions.”
