The Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted the 2022 Adams County budget at public hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 16. The 2022 budget is set at $659,207,432, which is an increase from 2021.
“Thanks to the rapid residential and business growth in Adams County, we are able to expand upon our ambitious plans for improving residents’ quality of life by our staff’s hard work throughout the year on the budget process,” said County Manager Raymond H. Gonzales. “We are still factoring in the effects of COVID-19 and long-term recovery efforts, and we are excited to move forward on several key projects in 2022.”
When setting its priorities for the 2022 budget, the Board of County Commissioners used five main criteria: education and economic prosperity, a high-performing and fiscally sustainable government, quality of life, safe and reliable infrastructure, and community enrichment.
Some specific projects and costs in the 2022 budget include:
- $11.7 million in increased allocations in several areas to help our most vulnerable residents, including but not limited to homelessness programs and a scholarship program for deserving students.
- $18.4 million in new and ongoing road and bridge projects.
- $4.3 million in new and replacement fleet needs throughout the county, including public safety and highway equipment.
- $36.2 million in facility projects, including continuing construction on the Fleet and Public Works building.
- $6.3 million in Parks, Open Space & Cultural Arts projects, including acquisitions to enhance an already robust system.
“We begin the planning process of the following year’s budget almost as soon as we adopt this one,” said Eva J. Henry, Board of County Commissioners Chair. “Allocating our taxpayer dollars is one of the most important tasks we as a board carry out every year, and we always ensure we put in the time and work to craft a thoughtful and fiscally responsible budget.”
Based on these board priorities, the Budget & Finance Department, headed by Director Nancy Duncan, worked with Gonzales and his staff to plan and prepare the proposed 2022 budget with input from all elected officials and department directors. The 2022 adopted budget is available for review at adcogov.org/budget.
The mission of the Budget & Finance Department is to develop a financial plan ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of county residents. Adams County is committed to adopting a budget that facilitates the orderly and efficient delivery of county government services, as directed by the Local Government Budget Law of Colorado, other governmental mandates, policy directives developed by the Board of County Commissioners, and resident feedback.

Adams County Health Department (ACHD) Supports Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s Recent Action to Protect Clean Air for All
Today, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) announced the largest state enforcement package against a single facility for air pollution violations to Suncor refinery in Commerce City. Suncor must pay at least $10.5 million toward penalties and projects due to air pollution violations from July 2019 through June 2021. This action is a step toward holding Suncor more accountable for past violations and requires the refinery to take steps to prevent future violations.

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the Adams County Board of Commissioners unanimously elected Commissioner Emma Pinter as board chair for 2024. Pinter first took office to represent District 4 as commissioner in 2019 and won re-election in 2022.

Adams County, VOA Colorado, DRCOG, and Senior Hub Seek Volunteers to Deliver Meals to Older Adults
The nonprofit Senior Hub recently reported it was running out of funds to continue supporting its Meals on Wheels program in Adams County. To ensure Senior Hub’s existing clients continue to receive meal delivery services, Adams County has partnered with Senior Hub, Volunteers of America Colorado (VOA Colorado), and Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) to fund emergency meals while a long-term strategy is developed to continue these services for older adults into the new year.

Governor Polis Orders Flags to Fly Half Staff to Honor Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
DENVER - Governor Polis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on all public buildings to honor Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the Nation’s highest court as directed by President Biden. Adams County Commissioners Award More Than $8 Million in Open Space Grants
On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Adams County Board of Commissioners (BoCC) awarded more than $8 million in open space grants for 16 projects thanks to the voter-approved Open Space Sales Tax. Funding for the fall 2023 grant cycle came from revenues from the first half of the 2023 Adams County Open Space Sales Tax, which was passed by Adams County voters in 1999, and in perpetuity in 2020.

Adams County Celebrates National Adoption Day
On Thursday, Nov. 16, 18 children in Adams County welcomed a new start on National Adoption Day. A special celebration took place at the Adams County Justice Center, 1100 Judicial Center Dr., Brighton.
The Board of County Commissioners, Human Services Department, and the 17th Judicial District hosted the adoptive families. Adams County projects a total of 130 adoptions will be finalized by the end of the year.
