Household Chemical Waste Roundup

The Adams County Household Chemical Waste Roundup will be held on Saturday, May 6, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., at Water World, 8801 N. Pecos St., Federal Heights. Tri-County Health Department is organizing the roundup in partnership with the county’s Office of Sustainability.

Household Chemical Roundups offer a means for county residents to properly dispose of potentially hazardous household waste that could otherwise contaminate our water supply, air, and landfills. Products accepted at the roundup include paint and paint products, motor oil, antifreeze, automotive fluids and fuels, vehicle batteries, household batteries, solvents, house and garden chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), cleaning supplies, items containing mercury, propane tanks, and passenger vehicle and pickup truck tires off the rim. No electronic waste or waste from businesses will be accepted at this event. For a complete list of waste items accepted, visit the Tri-County Health website.

This event is open to residents of Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Thornton, and unincorporated Adams County. Residents are encouraged to register online in advance at Tri-County Health. Adams County residents should bring suitable proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, and $25 per vehicle to offset the high cost of hazardous waste disposal. The cost of hazardous materials disposal can cost more than $130 per household through a private company.

Note: The cities of Aurora, Northglenn, and Westminster are not participating in the events so residents of these cities cannot bring waste to the roundup. This does not affect residents of unincorporated Adams County that have Aurora, Northglenn, or Westminster addresses, since all residents in unincorporated Adams County are eligible to attend. For more information, residents of Northglenn should call 303.450.4004; residents of Aurora should call 303.739.7372; and residents of Westminster should call 303.706.3362.

Volunteers are needed at the event to help with registration, vehicle off-load, and waste processing. Volunteers are allowed to dispose of their waste for free. Individuals and community groups interested in helping with this event should call 720.200.1580 or register online at Tri-County Health. This event is sponsored by Adams County; the cities of Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, and Thornton; Tri-County Health Department; Darling International Inc.; and Interstate Batteries.

In 2016, the Adams County Household Chemical Roundup Program properly disposed of more than 116,117 pounds of hazardous materials serving an estimated 668 households.
