Adams County Awarded for Accounting Excellence for 30-Plus Years in a RowReceiving the highest level of recognition for financial reporting once is significant, but to receive it annually for more than three decades running? That signifies an above-and-beyond commitment to excellent fiscal service to the Adams County community.

This month, Adams County was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the annual comprehensive financial report for fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2023.

This certification comes to the county thanks to the efforts of the Adams County Accounting Team in the Budget & Finance Department. In complement to the Certificate, the Budget & Finance Department itself was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s Award of Financial Reporting Achievement to recognize the team’s extraordinary efforts.

“For Adams County to have earned this recognition for the last 30 years speaks volumes to the hard work, diligence, and character of the public servants in the Budget & Finance Department,” said Commissioner Lynn Baca, Chair of the Board of Adams County Commissioners. “This award for excellence in financial reporting shows we are committed to our community’s right to know what’s happening in their government and in every action we take. We are so deeply proud of this team, this certification, and all it means for our county.”

In its news release announcing the recognition for Adams County, the GFOA said the Adams County report “demonstrated a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story.”

This certificate was created by the GFOA to recognize state and local government agencies that go above and beyond the minimum requirements for reporting and accounting principles and is the highest form of recognition available to state and local government agencies in accounting and financial reporting. Adams County has earned this designation for more than 30 years in a row.

“I am so proud of our team for earning this recognition, and for continuing—year after year—to put in the hard work to make sure our community is receiving the highest level of fiscal responsibility and transparency possible,” said Nancy Duncan, Director of Budget & Finance. “Adams County’s residents trust us to serve them, and ensuring practical, thorough, and thoughtful financial reporting is an essential responsibility of accountable governance—and we take that duty seriously.”

The Budget & Finance Department handles all accounting, payroll, budget preparation, procurement, contracts, and more for all of Adams County’s many departments. Importantly, the Budget & Finance Department is responsible for the preparation and research for all documents and reports advising county leadership for the current and future state of county financial needs, stewarding the $800-plus million budget for the county.
