Adams County Clerk and Recorder Josh Zygielbaum addressed the incorrect ballot issue for Aurora voters today in a news conference. Zygielbaum is working with the county’s ballot printing service to issue corrected ballots for 17,412 Aurora voters in Adams County. Voters in Aurora should receive these corrected ballots early next week.
In the late evening of Tuesday, Oct. 15, Zygielbaum became aware of a mistake where voter instructions directed Aurora voters to “Vote for One” rather than “Vote for Two” in the at-large City Council contest.
The Aurora City Clerk sent the Elections Department the correct ballot information initially. The mistake was made when the department created the proof of the ballot. The ballot proof was then sent to and approved by the Aurora City Clerk, and the ballots were sent to the printer.
“Regardless of receiving approval from the city, this error should never have taken place. It’s unacceptable to have errors in ballots,” said Zygielbaum. “Our focus now is to get corrected ballots to residents in Aurora so they have ample time to submit by Election Day.”
Corrected ballots will be in the mail by Friday, Oct. 18, the statutory deadline for mailing ballots in Colorado, and in voters’ hands by early next week.
“For Aurora voters, the best option is to complete and return the corrected ballot,” Zygielbaum adds. “If a voter has already returned the initial, incorrect ballot, returning a completed, corrected ballot will void the initial ballot. Under no circumstances will the Elections Department process two ballots for one voter. This is standard procedure for all Elections.”
If voters return only the incorrect ballot, election judges will review and count those ballots after they’ve been separated from the return envelope, ensuring voter anonymity.

Adams County Confirms First Human Case of West Nile Virus for 2023
Adams County Health Department (ACHD) officials confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus within the county this year. Additionally, West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes within the county.
West Nile virus is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. In Colorado, most human cases are reported in August and September. In 2021, Colorado had 175 reported human cases of West Nile virus, including 11 deaths.

Adams County Commissioners Award More Than $9 Million in Open Space Grants
On Tuesday, June 27, the Adams County Board of Commissioners (BoCC) awarded more than $9 million in open space grants for 21 projects thanks to the voter-approved Open Space Sales Tax. Funding for the spring 2023 grant cycle came from revenues from the second half of the 2022 Adams County Open Space Sales Tax, which was passed by Adams County voters in 1999, and in perpetuity in 2020.

Adams County Students Awarded More Than $1 Million in Scholarships
Fifty-eight Adams County high school students were awarded scholarships totaling more than $1 million on Wednesday, June 7, through the Adams County Scholarship Fund.
