Byron Fanning Named Director of the Parks & Open Space Department

Byron Fanning has been named Director of the Adams County Parks & Open Space Department. Fanning will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

“Byron will be picking up the reins and leading the charge of implementing the vision of the county,” said County Manager Raymond Gonzales. “We are excited to have his leadership and experience complement the superb Parks & Open Space staff.”

Fanning is an Adams County resident with 12 years of experience in the industry. He is a passionate believer in what parks and open space means to the community. Fanning previously worked for the City of Aurora as Recreation Manager and Business Services Manager for the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department.  He also has an extensive background in the restaurant industry including working for Denny's Restaurants and owning his own restaurant concept called "On the Go Bistro" in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

“As an Adams County resident and user of the parks, trails, and open space properties, I couldn't be more excited to join this outstanding team of public servants and become part of this thriving culture,” said Fanning. “My mother-in-law attended Brantner Elementary School in a two-room schoolhouse on the property that is now the Knolls Golf Course at the Riverdale Regional Park. I taught my boys how to fish and hike at Adams County open space properties such as the Riverdale Regional Park, Niver Canal, and Twin Lakes Park.”

Fanning earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix in Business Management. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Fanning grew up in Sayreville, New Jersey, and has lived in various locations in the Western United States before making Adams County his home. He is a former DJ, an avid baseball fan, and enjoys coaching his two sons in various sports.

Governor Polis Orders Flags Lowered to Honor 9/11 Anniversary

Governor Polis ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on all public buildings statewide on Monday, September 11, 2023, from sunrise to sunset to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and also in recognition of Patriot Day, which was designated by Congress in 2001.  

President Biden issued A Proclamation on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, 2023, and ordered flags lowered to half-staff. The full text is below:

Adams County Health Department Reports First Death of the Season from West Nile Virus Infection

Adams County Health Department (ACHD) officials confirmed the first death from West Nile virus, an adult resident, within the county this year.

West Nile virus is spread to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most infected with the virus do not have symptoms. However, one in five could develop flu-like symptoms, which typically begin two to 14 days after exposure. Serious, potentially deadly neurologic illness occurs in fewer than one in 100 infected people.

Deputy County Manager Chris Kline Credentialed by International Local Government Management Organization

Chris Kline, Deputy County Manager of Adams County, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from ICMA, the International City/County Management Association. Kline is one of over 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program, and the third credentialed leader currently serving within Adams County government.
